Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has said everyone on the island of Ireland should have equal access to RTÉ programmes online.

Speaking after party representatives met RTÉ at Stormont said at present, users in the North cannot access the RTÉ Player because internet service providers, particularly BT, do not recognise users’ IP addresses as being Irish.

Mr McCartney said: “I welcome the fact that RTÉ came to the Assembly today to discuss the concerns of users here.

“Following the meeting it was agreed that the DETI committee work with RTÉ and the internet service providers to ensure everyone on the island has equal access to RTÉ player services.

Mr McCartney concluded: “This was identified in the Good Friday Agreement and 18 years on it is important the broadcasters and internet service providers, together with both governments, work together to achieve a resolution.”
