The Derry accent is one of Ireland’s favourites, according to a recent survey.

The survey, carried out by theslicedpan.com throughout last week, rated the various accents thoughout the island and put them in order of the most popular.

The Sliced Pan included two Dublin accents in their poll which left a total of 33 to choose from around the country.

Users then used the thumbs up or thumbs down system, meaning they not only voted for their favourite accents but also what was their least favourite.

215,000 votes were cast in the survey, with Derry coming fourth.

Donegal emerged the clear winner with Galway second and Cork third.

The top five accents, according to the survey were:

1 – Donegal
2 – Galway
3 – Cork
4 – Derry
5 – Roscommon

The bottom five were:

29 – Laois
30 – Longford
31 – North Dublin
32 – Offaly
33 – D4

Among those who are proud of their Derry accent is singer Nadine Coyle (pictured) who once had to be subtitled for US audiences when she appeared on America's Next Top Model.

Referring to long-running criticism of her accent, the former Girls Aloud member said: "I can't decide which way I talk. I really, honestly can't. And it was funny, I was talking to an interviewer from Derry – there's so many of us around – and he said that when he came to London everybody thought he was American.

"I said: 'I get that all the time. People think I'm from America'.

"When you're in Ireland you know it's a Derry accent. I was born and raised in Derry and I can't really change the way I talk."

She added: "My advice to people getting criticism over their accents would be tell people to mind their own business. Why are people worrying about their accents? Worry about your own accent. Never you worry about how other people talk."
