The solicitor of a 22-year-old man who flipped over a car after riding a motorbike down a one way street said the defendant was like a 'Jason Bourne stuntman' and was 'lucky to be alive'.

Eugene McGinley of Amelia Court was charged with dangerous driving and no insurance. The offences took place on March 19, 2015.

The court heard that McGinley drove the wrong way down Chapel Road, a one-way street, on a motorbike not wearing a helmet. He struck one car and then struck a second car, being flung off his bike, flipping over the car and landing on the road behind it, sustaining serious head injuries.

The court heard McGinley drove the wrong way down Chapel Road, a one-way street, on a motorbike not wearing a helmet.

After striking a car and he then struck a second, which resulted him being flung off his bike, flipping over the car and landing on the road behind it, sustaining serious head injuries.

Seamus Quigley, defence solicitor, said: “He was like something out of a Jason Bourne film but in those films a stuntman does the stunts, not Matt Damon.”

Mr Quigley added “A witness said she saw him flung up in the air and he appeared to fly very high like a star in the sky.

“Generally, this would have been something you would have seen in a coroner's court, he's extremely lucky to be alive.”

Mr Quigley added McGinley was extremely appreciative to the people first on the scene and the staff of Altnagelvin Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital for saving his life.

He added: “He's lucky he didn't die of his own stupidity firstly by wearing no helmet then riding a motorbike down a one-way street.”

District Judge Barney McElholm described McGinley as “a lucky man.”

McGinley was fined £215, disqualified from driving for 18 months until tested and given a conditional discharge of two years.
