A security alert in Derry has ended after the PSNI confirmed that 'nothing untoward' was found during searches of a number of areas in the Waterside.

The railway station at Duke Street was evacuated shortly after 3pm yesterday while a security alert was also declared at the Quarry Steps in the Spencer Road after a number of suspicious objects were found close to the route of the Apprentice Boys' Parade.

A suspicious object was also discovered by officers in the area of Alfred Street and Clooney Terrace at around 11pm last night.

A number of local properties were evacuated as the object was examined by Army Technical Officers (ATO).

Police have now confirmed that 'nothing untoward' was found during the searches at the railway and the Quarry Steps.

The device found close to Alfred Street was also declared as 'nothing untoward'.

All roads have re-opened to traffic and the railway station has been re-opened.

The PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan said: “The security operation commenced following claims that explosive devices had been left in the area of Quarry Steps and the railway station.

"Our priority throughout this operation was to keep people safe. We appreciate the support of local people as we worked to establish the substance of the claims and I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and co-operation during this operation."
