Funeral of Fr Michael McEldowney

The funeral of Fr Michael McEldowney, the former parish priest of Claudy in Co Derry, will take place today.

Fr McEldowney passed away at Anniscliff House, Maghera on Thursday. He was 78.

His remains were last night taken from the home of his sister, O’Kane, 145 Fivemilestraight, Maghera, to St Patrick’s Church, Glen, Maghera.

His Requiem Mass will take place at 2.30pm this afternoon.

Fr McEldowney will be laid to rest immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Following studies in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Fr McEldowney was ordained on 17 June, 1962.

After an appointment in Kilrea, he served as curate in Keenaught from 1962 until 1965, after which he served in the parish of Greencastle in Co Tyrone for two years.

Appointed to Straw in 1967, he moved to Coleraine 12 years later, where he served for a year.

After serving as curate in Drumsurn from 1977 until 1988, he moved to neighbouring Limavady, where he ministered for six years.

After this he was appointed parish priest of Ardstraw West and Castlederg, before moving to Keenaught in 1993, where he served until 1998.

He was then appointed parish priest of Claudy where he served until retirement in 2009.
