Ireland’s victory over Italy in last night has resulted in a change of time for a major republican event taking place in Derry this weekend.
Hundreds of republicans ae due gather in the city on Sunday to remember IRA members who died during the “Troubles.”
The annual Volunteers Sunday march, accompanied by eight bands, was originally due leave Central Drive in Creggan at 2.30pm to make its way to the republican plot in the City Cemetery.
Up to 2,000 people are expected to take part.
However, due to Ireland’s game with France in the last 16 of the European Championships kicking off at 2.00pm, the start time has been brought forward to 12.00 noon.
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said the decision had been taken to allow those intending to take part in the commemoration to watch the “historic” game.
Mr McCartney said the decision had been taken after talking with family members of “our patriot dead.”
He added: "Given the fact that two Derry players are involved in the team and the manager has strong local connections we wanted to give people the option of paying tribute to our patriot dead and watch the game.
"This is an important event in the city's republican calendar as we remember all those who gave their lives for the cause of Irish freedom and particularly in this year when we are commemorating the centenary of the Easter Rising, it is important that we have a large turnout in recognition of their sacrifice."
