A woman who recently made the ‘People of the Year’ list in the famous Time magazine is to speak at an event in Derry next month.
Mona Eltahawy (pictured) will give the keynote address at the Foyle Women’s Information Network (FWIN) on October 21.
Eltahawy is the author of a book called ‘Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution’.
During the revolution that toppled Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak, she appeared on most major media outlets, leading the feminist website Jezebel to describe her as ‘The Woman Explaining Egypt to the West’.
In November 2011, she alleged that that she was beaten and sexually assaulted by Egyptian police.
Newsweek magazine named Ms Eltahawy one of its ‘150 Fearless Women of 2012’.
Time magazine featured her along with other activists from around the world as its ‘People of the Year’ and Arabian Business magazine named her one of the ‘100 Most Powerful Arab Women’.
A FWIN spokeswoman said they were delighted to have secured Eltahawy to speak at their conference.
The conference, entitled Peace Power & Patriarchy II, will be held on Wednesday, October 21, in the Maldron Hotel from 10am to 4pm.
Other speakers will include Dr Cathy Higgins, Maureen Hetherington and Lilian Seenoi from the North West Migrants Forum.
Along with the speakers, the conference will also feature workshops and a number of discussions.
