Postal workers are refusing to deliver mail to two Derry streets where residents are being terrorised by a dangerous stray dog, understood to be a Pitbull Terrier, a local councillor has claimed.

The revelation came to light at this afternoon’s meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council at which fears were expressed for the safety of children.

Speaking during a discussion on a new Dog Control Order, Independent Cllr Gary Donnelly said more needed to be done by Council to address the issue of stray and dangerous dogs roaming the city’s Creggan area.

Cllr Donnelly said the problem was “particularly serious” in Swilly Gardens and Cromore Gardens which, he revealed, postal workers were refusing to enter because of the dangers posed by stray dogs.

He added it was only a matter of time before a child was seriously injured.

Pointing out residents in the affected areas would not contact police, he said it was up to the Council’s dog wardens to address the issue.

He said it was only a matter of time before a child was seriously hurt.

His concerns were shared by Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell who said he was aware of the issue in Cromore Gardens.

A report on the matter is to be brought back to Council.
