B&Q is in ‘advance discussions’ with a national retailer interested in taking over its vacant Derry store, it has been revealed.
The Buncrana Road store closed its doors last month, with the loss of 50 jobs.
It was one of five of the nine B&Q stores in Northern Ireland which parent company Kingfisher plans to close.
However, there are now plans for a new tenant to take over the empty store located at Faustina Retail Park.
A spokesperson for B&Q said: “We are in advanced discussions with a national retailer to take the majority of the space.”
The spokesperson added that B&Q anticipated that a planning application will be made ‘shortly’ in relation to the takeover of the store.
The news comes after supermarket chain Tesco were speaking to what it described as ’a number of interested parties’ with a view to opening a supermarket on a site adjacent to the B&Q store.
Tesco gave up their plans site after failing to gain planning permission for its proposal.
