Police are investigating a break-in at a house in Co Derry in which cash and jewellery, believed to be of sentimental value, were stolen.

Sometime between 5.30pm and 8.15pm on Saturday last, entry was forced to a house in the Mitchell Park area of Dungiven.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed entry was also forced at a neighbouring property sometime during the same evening however it is believed nothing was stolen in this incident.

Sinn Féin councillor Sean McGlinchey described the incident as ‘despicable’.

“I have no doubt that it’s local people behind this,” he said, adding: “I would ask everyone out there to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious that they may see.”

Appealing for information, the PSNI spokesperson added: “Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to contact Detectives in Coleraine on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
