Kenny Shiels has been appointed the new boss of Derry City.
The club have acted swiftly in appointing a new manager following the news at the weekend that caretaker boss Paul Hegarty did not want the job.
The appointment of Shiels will surprise many.
However, he has great experience of managing clubs in both Ireland and Scotland and is a very colourful character.
Among the Irish League club that Shiels has managed are Coleraine, Ballymena and Larne.
He moved to Scottish Premier League club Kilmarnock in 2010 to assist manager Mixu Paatelainen. Shiels was promoted to manager in 2011, after Paatelainen was appointed manager of Finland.
Kilmarnock won the Scottish League Cup in his first season in charge, but he was sacked in June 2013 after he had been frequently punished by the Scottish Football Association for making controversial comments.
Shiels was appointed manager of Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton in December 2013, and resigned in May 2014.
One of his first tasks as Derry City will be to try and secure the signatures of some of the club’s top players who are now out of contract.
The Derry News today revealed that a number of clubs are interested in signing one of the club’s key players, Patrick McEleney.
