The move by the United Nations to appoint an independent expert to investigate discrimination against the LGBT community, has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney.
Mr McCartney said there could be no place in society discrimination and violence against the LGBT community.
He added: “ No one should have to face violence as a result of their sexuality.
"The UN has also agreed to appoint an independent expert to compile annual reports on the discrimination faced by the LGBT community around the the world.
"The European Union has been good for LGBT rights and it simply does not make sense to abandon that at the behest of the most right wing and reactionary wing of the British Tory party which is determined to demolish human rights and equality legislation.”
Mr McCartney concluded: "The people of the North of Ireland voted to remain in the EU and that should be respected."
