There have been calls for vigilance in the Draperstown area of Co Derry after a number of locked cars were broken into.

It is understood that a male entered two cars that were parked outside homes in the Slievegallion Park area of the town.

It is not believed that anything was stolen.

The incident, which occurred on Friday last, came just days after garden machinery and a racing bike were stolen from properties in the area.

On Sunday, May 21 police received a report that sometime within the past seven days a Felt racing bike and a Stihl leaf blower were stolen from a shed at a house in the Woodland Grove area of Draperstown.

Meanwhile, sometime between Thursday, May 19 and 7pm on Friday, May 20, an orange and white Stihl leaf blower was also stolen from a shed in the Woodland Heights area of Draperstown.

Over the past number of weeks, there have also been reports of bogus caller targeting elderly residents in the local area.

Sinn Féin councillor, Brian McGuigan has called on everyone living and working in the local community to be ‘alert and to act in solidarity.’

The republican elected representative said: “We need to be concerned for all our neighbours’ property and belongings.

“I will be raising the issue of this spike in crime in our parish with all those tasked with management responsibilities for Mid-Ulster Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).”
