Former DUP Foyle MLA Maurice Devenney has confirmed he is stand as an Independent Unionist candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The Derry City and Strabane District councillor (pictured) quit the DUP in January after he was suspended by the party over allegations he canvassed for votes for the SDLP’s Mark Durkan outside a Waterside polling station during last May’s Westminster election.

He denied the allegations.

He announced at a Council meeting that he would be continuing as an independent unionist.

Days later he announced his intention to join the Ulster Unionists.

However, within days he revealed he had had a rethink after what he described as a “disagreement” on a number of issues following discussions with Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt.
