Wayne Rooney has sent his condolences to the families of the five people who lost their lives in the weekend tragedy at Buncrana Pier.

Sean McGrotty, his two young sons Mark and Evan, Ruth Daniels and her teenage daughter Jodie-Lee, died when their car slipped into Lough Swilly from a slipway at the seaside town’s pier.

Twelve-year-old Mark and eight-year-old Evan were big fans of Manchester United and their idol was Wayne Rooney.

Following their tragic deaths, an online campaign was launched to get the United striker to honour the two boys.

He obliged this evening when he tweeted his condolences to the families of those who died in Buncrana on Sunday night.

Friends of Jodie-Lee, who was 14 years old, have launched a similar campaign for recognition from her hero, pop star Justin Beiber.

The five people who died on Sunday will be buried on Thursday afternoon.
