Tributes have been paid to a young charity fundraiser from Derry who died suddenly, aged just 27.
Rachel Downey (pictured), from Cambourne Park in the Kilfennan area of the Waterside, passed away at Altnagelvin Hospital on Sunday.
She was laid to rest today in Ballyoan Cemetery following a Service in Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church.
Her parents, Reggie and Grace, sister Lynn and brother David, described her as a “beloved daughter, loving sister, wonderful aunt and dear fiancée.”
The former Lisneal College student was well-known for her fundraising and charity work locally, having worked with the likes of Guide Dogs NI and the Royal National Institute of the Blind Northern Ireland (RNIB).
She also helped out at the Rainbow Rescue and Rehoming Centre for Cats and Dogs in Eglinton, and also support the charity through fundraising activities.
A spokesperson for the Rainbow Rescue and Rehoming Centre paid tribute to Rachel, describing her as a “joy to be around.”
“We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Rainbow volunteer Rachel Downey,” the spokesperson said.
“Rainbow was one of many charities Rachel supported.
“She first come into our lives as a volunteer at the centre and in recent years was always the first to offer help at fundraising events.
“Rachel had the most caring spirit, she was a joy to be around and her passion for life has left us with lasting memories.”
The spokesperson added: “The Rainbow family would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Rachel’s family and friends.”
“The world has lost a beautiful young lady, RIP Rachel.”
Tributes have also flooded into Rachel’s Facebook page, where friends have posted their own condolences and memories.
“Still in shock that you're gone. I won’t be able to have a laugh with you anymore, like we used to. Heaven gained you far too soon. Xx,” one read.
Another tribute read: “Rachel was just loveliest kind hearted beautiful wee girl, heart of gold. I’m so, so sorry.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with her entire family circle at this very sad and difficult time, Heaven has gained another beautiful angel,” another post read.
