Planning permission has been granted for security cameras to be installed along Derry’s popular riverside walkway.

Derry City and Strabane District Council are to erect eight cameras at various points along the walkway, from the Fort George site up to the city centre.

Over the past two years, Foyle Search and rescue have responded to 345 incidents along the river, rescuing 31 people and recovering six bodies.

The green light for the project was given councillors at a meeting of the council’s planning committee in Strabane.

Among the reasons put forward by the council for the installation of the cameras were suicide prevention and reducing the fear of crime.

Footage from the cameras will also be used in court proceedings.

It will cost £120,000 to put up the cameras, which will be monitored by the council on a 24/7 basis.
