DERRY 1-17, TYRONE 1-22 (after extra time)
Derry suffered a five point defeat to Tyrone in a thrilling Dr McKenna Cup Final at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh tonight.
It was a case of so near, so far for Damien Barton’s men who were attempting to lift the trophy for the first time since 2011.
Leading by four points at the end of the first half, Derry appeared have ended that five year wait as they led by three points going into the dying minutes of the game.
However, Tyrone – aiming for their sixth successive win in the competition – scored three late points to take the game into extra time.
Micky Moran’s side led by four points at the end of the first half of extra time but Derry reduced the deficit to one when Conor McAtamney fired over the bar with three minutes remaining.
However, a Monroe point and a goal from a McCurry penalty wrapped the win up for the Red Hand County.
Next up for Derry is their opening National Football League game against Fermanagh at Owenbeg tomorrow week, throw-in 2.00pm.
