Millennium Forum staff celebrated in style last night at the Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards in Belfast, after scooping the top prize in the ‘Corporate Responsibility’ category.
The theatre was recognised for its ‘Go Art Go Kart’ art project which took place earlier last year in collaboration with Campsie Karting.
The innovative project led to a lasting legacy in the form of one of the largest hand-painted murals in Northern Ireland and a unique go-kart customised in graffiti art, all of which was created by local young people under the direction of artist, Sean O’Donnell.
Over the course of ten weeks, O’Donnell trained twenty local young people as well as eight members of the Polish community in sketching, painting, planning and design.
He then guided them as they painted a 50 metre mural on the Campsie Karting race-track wall, which is still on display. The group also hand-painted a kart which was put on display at the Millennium Forum and was seen by over 30,000 people last April/May.
Cara McCartney, Sponsorship and Development Officer at the Forum, accepted the award:
She said Go Art Go Kart was an “exemplary example” of how the Forum was creating sponsorships for local businesses which go beyond just branding, but created experiences for customers with real benefits.
She added: “This project upskilled and instilled confidence in 20 teenagers’ artistic abilities and gave Campsie Karting and the Millennium Forum regional brand recognition.
“Arts and Business NI have been hugely supportive of the Millennium Forum and the Arts in NI and it is with their help and the collaboration of local businesses large and small, that we can continue to bring award winning youth and community projects to our communities.”

Campsie Karting Chief Executive, Eamonn Gallagher, is also delighted with the result:
“Corporate responsibility is very important to us and I wanted to engage more with schools in the community, but I wasn’t aware of the possibility of doing an art project with local students until Cara from the Forum highlighted this to me.
"The project has increased recognition of Campsie Karting and we are thrilled with the result. More importantly, it has left a lasting legacy for our staff and customers to enjoy.”
